‘The dugongs in this design are source of local bush food in the Maningrida region. They are very respected and very important to Bininj people who would only hunt them to feed families or for special occasions. Back in the early days they were hunted traditionally using dugout canoe boats and hand-woven ropes made from tree bark. They are rarely hunted these days because of the special hunting skills you need to find them and capture them. Locals have only hunted them long time ago, not much today.’ Genevieve Smith
