MEDIA RELEASE

Bábbarra Women’s Centre Returns to Bangalore for Collaborative Textile Art Exhibition

September 4, 2024

Bábbarra Women’s Centre is excited to return to Bangalore with six delegates to present their latest exhibition, Karri-djarrk-durrkmirri (we together work), developed in collaboration with Tharangini Woodblock Studio and supported by the Australian Government’s Centre for Australia-India Relations.

The exhibition will be held at the Bangalore International Centre (BIC) from October 4 to 13, 2024.

Twenty-one unique textiles made from 70 individual woodblocks will be displayed. These designs were created by Bábbarra Women’s Centre artists and reinterpreted into woodblocks by Tharangini Studio artisans under the curatorial direction of Prithi Pais and Anshu Arora. The exhibition also features embroidery by Porgai women artisans and a film by Indian-Australian filmmakers Naina Sen and Anahita Ananth.

Tharangini Studio, a women-owned heritage woodblock printing studio founded in 1977, shares a commitment to craftsmanship, equality, and sustainability.

Bábbarra artists create textiles that depict West Arnhem Land’s rich cultural narratives, using screen-printing and lino-printing techniques. Their designs explore themes of food, hunting, daily life, local flora, and ancestral stories, including the yawkyawk (mermaid spirit). These ancestral stories, or Djang in Kuninjku, embody geographical, familial, and spiritual knowledge.

Six representatives from Bábbarra Women’s Centre will be in India from September 20 to October 6 to participate in workshops at Tharangini Studio and open the exhibition. The delegation includes Kuninjku artists Raylene Bonson and Abigail Gurawiliwili, and Kune, Rembarrnga Dalabon model/influencer Cindy Rostron.

This marks Bábbarra’s second exhibition at BIC, following their successful Jarracharra (Dry Season Winds) tour across India in March 2023, supported by the Kolkata Consul-General.

The title Karri-djarrk-durrkmirri (Karri – we, Djarrk – together, Durrkmirri – work) is a Kununjku word that reflects the spirit of collaboration and cultural exchange between these two artistic communities.
