Abigail Namundja
Biography
Abigail Gurawiliwili (Namundja) is an emerging artist with Bábbarra Designs and has been visiting the centre since 2012. In 2023 she joined the Arts Worker team, where she has continued to develop her distinctive lino print practice.
Abigail comes from a strong lineage of accomplished artists, including her mother, the late Jennifer Wurrkidj, and her grandmother, the late Helen Lanyinwanga, both renowned weavers.. Three generations of women from her family have worked together at Bábbarra Women’s Centre, sharing knowledge and creating textiles. Abigail often prints linocuts from her family’s collection, carrying forward the memory and legacy of the women who came before her.
Her totems include Kunkurra (spiral wind), Kunwardde (stone country rocks), Yawkyawk (young woman spirit), and Kandji (Jabiru). She also continues to print her mother’s dreaming, Ngalyod (rainbow serpent). The wildflowers of Arnhem Land are a recurring inspiration in her work.
Abigail’s lino print textiles are distinguished by her confident and sophisticated use of colour. She frequently incorporates ombré and rainbow effects, enhancing the depth and vibrancy of her designs.
