Lightning 2010 (also known as Gungura)

In this early design, Janet Marawarr has depicted lightning.

This design is of the lightning spirit Namarkon. The central image in the design represents the wet season lightning, which lives under the ground. This place is both dangerous and highly sacred. People should not disturb the ground and sacred areas in the wet season, as this may upset the powerful lighting spirit Namarkon, who may strike them down with a bolt of lightning.

Janet learned this story from her late husband many years ago. He was the eldest brother of famed bark painter Samuel Namundja.
