Rising Stars 2023 at Outstation Gallery

This year the women are rising – from Babbarra Women’s Centre, Papulankutja Artists, Spinifex Arts Project and Mimili Maku Arts.

Strong in story, passed down from mother and grandmother, the works in this year’s Rising Stars are phenomenal.

Betty Campbell from Mimili Maku has already attracted a huge following after only a year painting, and little wonder when the works by this cultural boss are so evocative and beautiful. Also from Mimili Maku is Umatji Tanya Tjapalyi, the daughter of Kunmanara Tjapalyi one of the founders of the art centre. Her works are stunning depictions of her mother’s country.
From Spinifex Arts Project we have Myrtle Pennington’s granddaughter, Michelle Anderson, with extraordinary works reminiscent of Myrtle but telling the stories of country in her own way.

It is also exciting to welcome back Papulankutja Artists after more than a decade and Sharon Doolan and Mildred Nyunkiya Lyons are truly rising stars. And from Babbarra Womens Centre we have established textile artists with works on paper.

Well known for their fabric, the artists of Babbarra have long used coloured fibre-tipped pens, pencils and crayons as part of their design process.
During COVID-19 lockdowns the studio was closed, and so the artists started drawing instead.  And it is our great pleasure to share those works as part of Rising Stars 2023.
